About UPSC CAPF (AC)

The Union Public Service Commission holds this examination once a year to recruit Assistant Commandants (Group 'A') for the Central Armed Police Forces: the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Candidates need a bachelor's degree and must be 20 to 25 years old on 1 August of the exam year, with the usual relaxations.

The written examination is two pen-and-paper papers on one day. Paper I, General Ability and Intelligence (2 hours, 250 marks), is objective: 125 multiple-choice questions of 2 marks each, set in English and Hindi, with one third of a question's marks taken away for each wrong answer. It covers general mental ability, general science, current events, Indian polity and economy, history of India, and Indian and world geography.

Paper II, General Studies, Essay and Comprehension (3 hours, 200 marks), is descriptive. Part A has essays worth 80 marks, written in English or Hindi; Part B (120 marks) has comprehension, précis writing, counter-arguments and grammar, in English only.

Paper I is evaluated first, and Paper II is evaluated only for candidates who reach the minimum qualifying marks in Paper I. Each paper has its own qualifying marks.

Candidates who qualify the written exam take Physical Standards and Physical Efficiency Tests (100 m, 800 m, long jump and, for men, shot put). Those who pass go to an Interview/Personality Test of 150 marks, and then Medical Standards Tests. The final merit list adds the written marks and the interview marks.
