About UPSC NDA & NA

The UPSC holds the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination twice a year, as NDA & NA (I) and (II). It admits unmarried young men and women, aged about 16½ to 19½, to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the National Defence Academy and to the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of the Indian Naval Academy. The (II) 2026 examination, held on 13 September 2026, was for the NDA's 158th course and the 120th Indian Naval Academy Course, beginning 1 July 2027, with 394 vacancies.

The written examination has two objective papers on the same day, each with its own 2½ hours: Mathematics (Paper I, 300 marks) and the General Ability Test (Paper II, 600 marks). It is a pen-and-paper test: answers are marked on an OMR sheet with a black ball pen, and calculators and log tables are not allowed.

Mathematics has 120 questions of equal marks (2.5 each) at Class 11 and 12 level: algebra, matrices and determinants, trigonometry, analytical geometry of two and three dimensions, differential and integral calculus, differential equations, vectors, and statistics and probability. The General Ability Test has 150 questions of equal marks (4 each): Part A, English (200 marks), and Part B, General Knowledge (400 marks) covering physics, chemistry, general science, history and the freedom movement, geography and current events.

Every question has four options, and a wrong answer loses one third of the question's marks. The Mathematics paper and Part B of the General Ability Test are printed in Hindi and English; Part A is in English. Candidates who reach the Commission's qualifying marks are called to the Services Selection Board (SSB) for the Intelligence and Personality Test (900 marks); the final merit list adds the written and SSB marks.
